Alex Eala bows out in French Open seniors debut

Alex Eala fought valiantly for a dream debut win in the Grand Slam seniors circuit, but it wasn’t meant to be — at least not this time.

The 20-year-old Filipino tennis ace absorbed a tough 0-6, 6-2, 3-6 defeat against fellow Grand Slam debutante Emiliana Arango of Colombia in the first round of the women’s singles at the 2025 French Open, held at the iconic Stade Roland Garros in Paris.

Just two days removed from celebrating her 20th birthday, Eala showed flashes of brilliance and resilience — especially after recovering from a demoralizing love-set loss in the opening frame.

In the second set, the former US Open juniors champion found her rhythm. With her groundstrokes and service game finally clicking, she traded early holds with Arango. Eala led 3-2 when rain temporarily halted play, but upon resumption, the momentum was clearly on her side. She swept the next three games to take the set, 6-2, and force a deciding third.

However, the final set was a test of nerves and execution.

Eala fell behind early with a service break but clawed her way back to within one game at 3-4, punctuating a dominant hold with a powerful forehand winner. She then leveled the following game at 30-all, thanks to an unforced error from Arango.

However, the Colombian held firm, using her second serve effectively to take a 5-3 lead and put the pressure back on Eala.

In what would be the final game, Arango matched every shot Eala threw at her. A marathon second point showcased both players’ grit, but it was Arango who prevailed — breaking the Filipino’s serve and sealing the match.

With the victory, Arango advances to face eighth seed Zheng Qinwen of China, who earlier defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-4, 6-3.

Despite the early exit, Eala showed promise and perseverance in her maiden Grand Slam appearance on the senior stage. And while the result wasn’t what she hoped for, her debut provided glimpses of a future where she could very well become a regular contender on tennis’s biggest stages.
